Big Tin Shed Limited is a not-for-profit business which exists in order to operate the Big Tin Shed: Unit 7 Victoria Works, Victoria Road, Hebden Bridge, HX7 8LB.

Big Tin Shed is operated by Big Tin Shed Limited, a company limited by guarantee, as a co-operative of, and for the benefit of, the tenants, who share the values and ethos of mutual co-operation.

The directors of the company are some of the tenants who offer their time as a director on a voluntary basis, supported by a freelance administrator.

This is an industrial unit with a large central space and 25 lettable private units (workshop / office spaces) at ground and first floor. Big Tin Shed is operated as a co-operative of, and for the benefit of, the tenants, who share the values and ethos of mutual co-operation.

The Big Tin Shed project was developed by Polly Webber, who created the co-operative over a decade ago, and from where the Alternative Technology Centre and Cycle Recycle, two of her projects, were operated. Under Polly’s leadership the development of the building and the community it holds grew as a collaboration between a number of different individuals, businesses and groups, including Noisy Toys (Robot Orchestra), Dancing Bear Ceramics, Curious Cargo, Lucy and the Machine, Frolicked Outdoor Puppet Theatre, Granny Turismo, Rehash Panache and others.

Today we have 22 local artists, businesses, community organisations and creative individuals occupying our 25 units.

Everyone who becomes a tenant is expected to contribute to the success of the overall operation through active engagement in the Big Tin Shed community, including attending meetings of all the tenants. Tenants may apply for membership of Big Tin Shed if they wish, to have more active engagement in decision making.

The aims and objectives of Big Tin Shed Limited are “to provide benefit to a range of small businesses and other community-based organisations through the provision of collaborative educational and other facilities that will allow them in turn to deliver a range of community and environmental benefits”.

BTS has a flexible selection policy and agreed criteria for new tenants, and so our waiting list does not operate on a first come, first served basis. We offer a range of lettable spaces from 9m2 to 45 m2. If you’re interested in finding out about becoming a tenant please email admin AT bigtinshed.co.uk
